If you're interested in the field of computer repair or even building computers from the ground up, this article will give you some idea of what you can expect to learn from an accredited school.

Even though most of the glamour belongs to those who program computers to work, it is the ones who build and repair them who really have the hardest jobs. There is more involved with the building and repairing of computers than with any aspect of programming, networking or other area. If you plan to do this for a living, a good school will teach you the following:

The first thing you will need is a basic course in electronics. You had better have a solid foundation and understanding of how current flows, what a transistor is, what a resistor is and a number of other electronically related areas. You may not have to know as much as an electrician, but you need to have a fundamental understanding in this area or you can end up frying your PC to a crisp.

After teaching you the basics of electronics, a good school will then concentrate on the individual parts of the computer itself.

You'll first learn about all the different pieces of electronic equipment that you'll be using to work on your computer. There are a number of diagnostic and assembly tools that you will need to learn how to use proficiently.

The next thing you will learn is a general overview of the various parts of the computer such as the mother board, power supply, memory chips, hard disk drive and all the peripheral equipment such as CD ROM drives, modems, and floppy disk drives. The entire list is of course much more extensive.

After learning what each part of the computer does, you'll learn how to shop for various pieces depending on compatibility issues. You'll learn what hard drives can be used, size wise, based on the type of mother board you have and things of that nature.

You'll then learn how to install every possible piece that can be put into a computer. This covers hard drives, modems, mother boards, CD ROM drives, backup drives and the list goes on and on. Each one of these items will have special installation instructions.

You'll learn basic trouble shooting techniques when things start to go wrong. This part of the course is usually the most challenging. What the instructor will usually do is present you with a computer that has a specific problem. As the student, you have to first diagnose what is causing the problem and then figure out the solution needed for repair. This is the most intensive part of the hands on course.

After your computer is built, you'll then learn how to format your hard drive and how to install the operating system.

Mixed in with these basic areas you'll also learn about computer numbering systems, how to install adapters, how data is stored and a number of other things that are just beyond the scope of this overview.

Finally, when your course is completed you will then go for your A-1 certification which will qualify you to get a job as a computer technician.

Building and repairing computers is not a glamorous job, but when people bring their computers in to be repaired, they probably count on you more than on anyone else in the computer industry, and that has to be a great feeling.

The most serious difficulty related to portable computers upgrade depends on their nature. In chase of portability, small size and minimum weight, laptop developers have to step aside from standard slot-card technology. Most of laptop devices are usually integrated into motherboard and the internal configuration may differ greatly depending on a model. That's why laptop parts are rather expensive and laptops are less upgradable than desktop PCs.

But, fortunately, there are still some ways to upgrade a notebook or to enlarge its abilities. The most common features are listed below:

RAM

Windows XP needs at least 256 Mb of RAM to work properly and some graphical chips use system RAM too, so you should aim 512 Mb or more. There are two necessary things to perform such kind of upgrade: a spare slot and a correct SODIMM (Small Outline Direct In-Line Memory Module) module. The slot is usually protected by an access panel on the bottom of your notebook.

Advice. Before you start an upgrade make sure:

that your laptop doesn't already have the maximum amount of memory installed,

that you're buying the right SODIMM module.

CD/DVD Drives
Installation of CD/DVD drives is available only if the drive matches the body of notebook (fits the form of original CD-ROM), provides the right connector and is supported by laptop BIOS. Note that laptop CD/DVD drives are much more expensive than desktop ones. As in case with HDD, alternative solution is to use external drives.

PC Cards (16-bit PCMCIA) and CardBus Cards (32-bit PCMCIA)

Those cards are expansion adapter cards used to add some useful features (dial-up modem, wireless networking, additional ports and else). PC cards are older and have much slower data transfer than CardBus cards. But beware of buying CardBus cards until you are sure that your laptop has a 32-bit bus.

External Devices
Using external devices requires external ports. All laptops have at least one USB port (universal port for a wide range of peripheral devices), and other ports are available depending on a model: PS/2, Firewire (IEEE 1394a) or Firewire 800 (IEEE 1394b), D-sub VGA (connection to analog monitor), DVI-D (connection to digital monitor), Bluetooth (for Bluetooth wireless connections) and other.

Those ports allow to connect external drives, monitor, TV-tuner, dial-up modem, wireless networking, mouse and keyboard, joystick and so on.

We have all lost items while working on the computer by accidentally deleting them or someone lost them for you. This can be very frustrating, as some files are very important to our livelihood. Let's start with lost files, which may still be on the disk. Don't give up hope. It is important to try all of you options. Use a tool such as File Recover or Uneraser to retrieve it. It is easy to use. Here are several ideas to get that file back intact. With a broken up disk and lost items from a file, the recovery software will quite likely not know what to do. The more simple the file, the better chance of recovery. For the most difficult recovery jobs, Partition Recovery is what we have found to be the best. Better yet is a real human to help you out, a data recovery specialist. These angels are trained at putting back together the pieces of files. If your data were valuable, it would be worth it to enlist their aid. It will cost a little more, but you will be glad you called for their help.

The question of which was the earliest computer is a difficult one. The very definition of what a computer is has changed over the years and it is therefore impossible to definitively answer the question. Many devices once called "computers" would no longer qualify as such by today's standards.

Originally, the term "computer" referred to a person who performed numerical calculations (a human computer), often with the aid of a mechanical calculating device. Examples of early mechanical computing devices included the abacus, the slide rule and arguably the astrolabe and the Antikythera mechanism (which dates from about 87 BC). The end of the Middle Ages saw a re-invigoration of European mathematics and engineering, and Wilhelm Schickard's 1623 device was the first of a number of mechanical calculators constructed by European engineers.

However, none of those devices fit the modern definition of a computer because they could not be programmed. In 1801, Joseph Marie Jacquard made an improvement to the textile loom that used a series of punched paper cards as a template to allow his loom to weave intricate patterns automatically. While the resulting Jacquard loom is not considered to be a computer, it was an important step because the use of punched cards to define woven patterns can be viewed as an early, albeit limited, form of programmability.

In 1837, Charles Babbage was the first to conceptualize and design a fully programmable mechanical computer that he called "The Analytical Engine". Due to limits of finances, and an inability to resist tinkering with the design, Babbage never actually built his Analytical Engine.

Large-scale automated data processing of punched cards was performed for the US Census in 1890 by tabulating machines designed by Herman Hollerith and manufactured by the Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation (CTR), which later became IBM. So by the end of the 19th century a number of technologies that would later prove useful in the realization of practical computers had begun to appear: the punched card, Boolean algebra, the vacuum tube (thermionic valve) and the teleprinter.

During the first half of the 20th century, many scientific computing needs were met by increasingly sophisticated analog computers, which used a direct mechanical or electrical model of the problem as a basis for computation. Youtube - The Left Wing Lapdog Of The Internet

Conservative web users argue that their views are being suppressed on youtube. Even heavyweights like Republican Hollywood filmmaker David Zucker can be censored.

A short film by Zucker, who worked with "Scary Movie 4," "Airplane!" and other comedies, reportedly had been offered to the Republican Party for use as an ad, but it was declined. It appeared briefly on YouTube, until it was flagged as being "inappropriate for some users".

While bloggers played a role in the last presidential election, most advertising and message delivery still comes from campaigns, political parties and interest groups with enough money to bankroll a television blitz. But the YouTube revolution -- which includes dozens of sites such as Google Video, Revver and Metacafe -- could turn that on its head.

If any teenager can put up a video for or against a candidate, and persuade other people to watch that video, the center of gravity could shift to masses of people with camcorders and passable computer skills. And if people increasingly distrust the mainstream media, they might be more receptive to messages created by ordinary folks.

"YouTube is a campaign game-changer, shifting the dynamics of how to reach voters and build intimate relationships," says Julie Supan, senior marketing director for the small, California-based firm, which by one measure now runs the 39th most popular Web site. "YouTube levels the playing field, allowing well-backed and less-known candidates to reach the same audience and share the same stage."

Even the seemingly simple act of posting footage of a politician's interview on "Meet the Press" or "The Daily Show" has a viral quality, because it can be seen by far more people than watched during a single broadcast.

The internet web site You Tube is a free and open area for internet users to post and view all kinds of video content. While there is a terms of service (TOS) that users must agree to before posting You Tube videos, the truth is that there is no real submission approval process. While posting copyright protected content is forbidden under the TOS, there is no mechanism to automatically screen for copyright protected material.

Detection of such material is left to the You Tube community, but, from the incredible number of protected videos that have appeared on the site, it seems clear that the TOS are not rigorously enforced. Of course, it is the responsibility of the users, not You Tube, to post material that is legal. Nevertheless, there have been some legal challenges to You Tube videos posted in recent months.

Contributors to YouTube seem to lean to the left. There are videos of verbal stumbles labeled "Stupid Bush" and "Bush Screwups," along with "President Bush Drunk," a bit on CBS's "Late Late Show" that slowed down a tape of the president so it appeared as if he were slurring his words. Another shows Bush, in his Texas days, extending his middle finger. (One positive video features a group called the Right Brothers singing "Bush Was Right.")

Any registered user can form a group, and the site includes one called "Support George Bush," which says, "Don't be afraid of your beliefs -- most campuses nationwide have a liberal bias anyway . . . as does the media." But it doesn't crack the top 100 in terms of membership, unlike "Bush Sucks," which is designed "for everyone who hates Bush and all his Republican cronies."
